Like many other Southern California residents, I’ve made the pilgrimage to Las Vegas a few times in the past- to celebrate a 21st birthday, to see the latest Cirque du Soleil show, or just to bask in the sights, sounds, smells and tastes that make Vegas a destination like no other in the world. This most recent journey though, shaped up to be quite a unique experience and consequently my best Vegas trip yet.
The six of us flew/drove in from our respective residences, spread all over the country. The six of us co-workers that is, joined by our boss, whose Vegas savvy exceeds that of any mere mortal. Although we all communicate with each other almost daily via phone, email, messenger etc., most of us were meeting in person for the very first time. Our objective in Vegas was two-fold: First, to establish that we all really did exist as physical beings and not just distant voices on the phone or typed dialogue in an email chain. Second, to take a whirlwind tour of everything that we offer our customers in Vegas. Needless to say the former was achieved upon arrival, while the latter took a little more time and effort.
Three very full days later, my distant co-workers now felt like sisters and I personally felt like I had received my undergraduate degree in “Vegas Studies”. Approaching the town with a purposeful, discerning eye and the help of an insider (our boss), put a whole new spin on the place that I had previously viewed as a blurry mass of overstimulation. Here are a few things that I learned:
1) You can tell a lot about a Vegas hotel by the casino carpeting. Look down next time you’re there.
2) People can eat a 6 lb, 24” burrito called the B3 and live to tell about it. The proof is in the pictures at Sahara’s Nascar Café.
3) Vegas restaurants and clubs are rife with strikingly innovative interior design. It seems kind of obvious, but I didn’t fully appreciate this fact until we toured some of these spaces before business hours.
4) The laid-back, sloppy-chic dress code of Los Angeles doesn’t cut it in Vegas- especially at the nightclubs.
5) TI has the most comfortable beds ever.
6) George Wallace “be thinkin’” about some hilarious stuff.

The Innkeeper Gang W/ THE man himself George Wallace

7) Amid a sea of gourmet restaurants, Boa Steakhouse offers quality a cut above the rest.
8) The ratio of men to women at The Hard Rock is about 4 to 1. The frequency of getting hit on (as a girl) at The Hard Rock is roughly once every 10 seconds.
9) The Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace house a spiral escalator. It didn’t occur to me how rare this was until I was about halfway down…better late than never.
10) Vegas shows that run for 15 years or more have done so for a good reason. A prime example is Mystere. It has evolved over time, but maintains a foundation of exquisite artistry, subtle humor and high energy that continues to fill the house.
11) M Resort is the chic, new off-Strip oasis. I used to think that “off-Strip” meant cheap and seedy, but a day of lounging at M’s “Daydream Pool Club” proved that’s definitely not the case.
12) No matter how frequently you travel to Vegas, your experience is brand new every time.
